Tunnel web

Tunnel web spiders are one of New Zealand’s dangerous spiders.

Where do they live?

These dangerous tunnel web spiders only live in the North Island and be careful as they are mostly in Wellington.

Bite

The tunnel web spider has a large bite that is very poisonous. When they bite you they will rip their fangs down you.

Where are their webs?

They make their webs under logs, branches, stumps and rocks.

How long they live for

Tunnel webs can live for ten years and after ten years they will die.

So be careful when you look under logs, branches, stumps, and rocks or they might BITE YOU!

The Tui

The Tui is a native New Zealand bird that New Zealand’s admire. It has a very high pitched voice that no human can hear it.The Tui eat berries, shrubs and insects. Its cousin is the Bellbird. It’s one of the biggest honeyeaters.

DESCRIPTION

The Tui may look black at times but when the sun glimmers on the tuis feathers you will find that it has several colours.The size of a Tui is 30 cm.The Tui has something white called a tuft that’s on its neck made of feathers.

LOCATION  

The location where the Tui is found in summer is the Pohutukawa tree. They go there because there is lots of nectar to drink in the flowers. In spring they go to the Kowhai tree, in autumn you will find them in the Totara tree. The Puriri is where the tui goes in winter, they also eat berries and shrubs. Did you know that the Tui is one of the biggest honey eaters because of the amount of nectar they eat?

SOUNDS

The Tui can almost copy anything, it can even copy the sound of a telephone when it's ringing, a little bit like parrots

NESTS

The Tui build their nests by using twigs, sticks, grass and soft materials as in ripped pieces of clothing lying around, or sometimes moss.  They build their nests in forks of trees or in  the crown of tree ferns. The nests are normally built in leafy branches of large trees so that the nest is stable and doesn’t fall. You will regularly find them in forests, parks and gardens.

So if you want to see a Tui come to New Zealand, and who knows you might even be lucky enough to see the sun glimmer on the Tuis feathers and then you will see that it has several colours.

KIWI!!!

The kiwi is a special bird. It is related to the extinct moa, and is more like an animal than a bird. We see the kiwi on our stamps, coins and New Zealand made goods, we even call ourselves KIWIS! This bird is special to New Zealanders, it is one of our native birds that we protect from all its predators.

Description

The kiwi has a long beak  so they can get earthworms. They use their long beak to reach into the soil. It has black bulging pupils and two sharp claws at the end of their feet. When you lay eyes on the kiwi  you think it looks spiky but it isn’t, it has nice and soft feathers. Kiwis feathers are warm, hang loose and are much fluffier than other birds.

Young

Breeding begins in winter for the brown kiwi and in spring for the little spotted kiwi. The hen takes many weeks to lay one egg, or sometimes, two or three eggs. Only one egg can be incubated. The eggshells are white or greenish white. Did you know that kiwis eggs are the size of six hen eggs?

Wings

The kiwi has wings the size of  our little finger, it has lost its tail. It is too heavy to fly and their wings aren’t strong, they are stiff.

Threats

The kiwi  has lots of predators. DOGS! Dogs are major threats to kiwis. Dogs can easily pick up the birds with their sharp teeth, and they can easily kill them because the kiwi doesn't have a bone frame or muscle in its ungainly body.

Conclusion

The kiwi is special to us New Zealanders, it is one of our native birds that we protect from all its predators. It is really not like a bird because it doesn't fly. If you are in New Zealand make sure you visit them in our native bush or in our zoo’s.

Tuatara

Tuatara have lived over thousands of years that is when dinosaurs were around.

Food  

Tuatara eat wetas, earthworms and spiders.

Enemy

The tuataras  enemy is a rat. The rat’s and possum’s steal the tuataras egg’s.

Habitat

The tuataras burrow is a hole in the ground. The tuatara sometimes shares its burrow with a bird such as a petrel.

Colour

Tuatara can be black, red, brown, light gray and light brown. You can only find Tuatara in New Zealand, pet shop’s, zoo’s and in the wild.

Possums

Possums are a pest in New Zealand. They are native to Australia and were brought to New Zealand in 1858.

Bovine TB

TB is the worst part of a possums. Cows and deer get it from sick possums. Farmers hate this disease, when an animal gets this disease they get very sick and will almost die. The government pays lots of money for poison to be laid to kill the possums.

Baby possums

Baby possums may look cute and cuddly, but you are being fooled. A possum is normally pregnant in April to March. When a baby possum is born they are the size of a bee. They drink milk and live in a pouch this makes them marsupial. Twins are very rare which is very good because new possums are born every year, and if they were all twins, we would have heaps! In six months they are the size of an adult and still ride on their mothers back.

Pests

Possums were brought to New Zealand in 1858 for their fur. 70 Million possums are out there killing Kiwis and other birds, and also eating eggs. Unfortunately the traps people put out can also kill kiwis.

When you are next out in the bush at night take a gun and look out for the red eyes because they are the naughty  little possums.

Tui

The Tui is native to New Zealand it is also a very good singer. The Tui is the first to sing in the morning and last in the evening.

Description

A Tui is completely black apart from their neck that has a tuft of white feathers that pokes out like a lump on your throat and a wing feather which is also white. Tui’s also have a tongue like a brush to soak up all the nectar out of the flowers.

Food

Tui’s drink kowhai nectar which is as sweet as honey, they also drink nectar plants like flax and puriri. They eat fruit plants but they mostly drink nectar.

Threats

Do you want to keep Tui’s alive? Then don’t let possums, cats, rats, magpies, weasels, stoats, and ferrets near them. All these predators do a lot of damage, and they also steal eggs from their nests!

Habitat

Tui’s are found in parks, gardens and forests which are mainly in the North Island. They are also found by their favourite nectar plants like flax, kowhai, rewarewa, pohutukawa and lots lots more.

Next time you want to see a Tui come to New Zealand and go to the native reserves or you may even see Tui’s in your backyard.

Glow worms

Intro

What are glow worms? Did you know that the New Zealand and Australian glow worms are maggots of special kind of fly known as a fungus gnat?

Description

When you go into limestone caves, look out for glow worms they look like stars shining in the night sky. On their tails they carry a bright green chemical which attracts midges and other small insects.

Did you know that they are not worms, they are beetles?

Habitat

You may have seen glow worms in limestone caves and damp places, you can  in also find them in dark shady parts of the bush. Look for their bright green lights when it is dark.

Food

When an insect is caught by the glow worm the larva emerges from its tube, hauls in the line, bites the insect, then eats it!

Conclusion

Next time when you are in a limestone cave or in the dark shady parts of the bush when it is dark, look for glow worms and their AWESOME green lights.

Kiwi

This bird is special to New Zealanders. It is just one of the native birds of our country.

Description

The Kiwi has a long beak which is used for eating it’s favourite food which is earthworms. They also have little dark eyes.

Threats

Due to them falling prey to dogs, stoats, rats and other animals.These animals are threats because they can kill the Kiwi and eat their eggs.

Eggs

Breeding begins in winter for the brown Kiwi and in spring for the little spotted Kiwi. The Kiwi egg is 12 to 13 centimetres long. Only one egg can be incubated at a time.

While you are in New Zealand come and see the Kiwis at Mount Bruce and local zoos, and if you are really quiet you might be able to to see them in the bush.

Scooby-doo and Spooky Island

At Spooky Island  an  airplane safely landed on the misty mysterious island. Shaggy and Scooby were planning this for years, so were the other members of the team. They all were excited. They were glad to be here, they couldn't wait. “I want to go on all the rides,” announced Shaggy to his team. “Yaya,” replied Scooby. “Hey stop there,” answered Fred.

On the last day they found that the old crew member called Scrappy-doo set up a trap for them at the top for the mountain at the Spooka blusa. Finally on the night of the Spooka blusa they got ready, Daffen wore a  red  and black dress  with a matching ring and head band, Fred wore a red rose and black midnight top and pants, so did Shaggy and Scooby. But  Valmer was going to wear a red and black dress. The whole team yelled ”it’s time to go to the Spooka blusa.” They drove in the Mystery Machine, when they arrived at the Spooka blusa, they danced through the night  until Shaggy and Scooby saw same light at the top of the mountain.  Then they remembered that they had a mystery to SOLVE.  They drove to the top of the mountain to fight the owner and his sidekick. They were VERY, VERY  strong and big. The sidekick had big black eyes, black hair and yellow teeth.  The car made some dust behind it as it  drove up the hill. They got out and kicked and punched the the owner and his sidekick. They had lost. Shaggy and Scooby’s team had defeated the other team and that was the end of them at Spooky Island.

Cinderella’s Revenge

In a deep sunny woods there lived two happy young ladies and their names were Cinderella and Cat woman, and they had wanted to go for a picnic at the local park the river.  They packed all types of food like fish and chips, sandwiches, biscuits and two cold drinks. Cinderella dressed up in a blue bright dress with blue boots, red lipstick and nice lovely pearls. She left her bright hair tied in a bun with her crown. Cat woman was a bit crazy with her dressing as well as Cinderella. Cat woman wore a dark purple jumpsuit with her bright brown hair left down.

In a complete silenced room Cat woman whispered in a evil voice, “you will be mine, you hear, mine.”

“Let’s go, chop chop “ Cinderella exclaimed.

When they arrived at the picnic spot Cat woman exclaimed, “Wow this park sure has got a beautiful view from here. Perhaps we should sit by the river?”

“Excellent choice” Cinderella added. Cinderella laid out the picnic blanket and got the food set up. The daisies and sunflowers smelt like they just had a sprinkle of perfume. The lovely air smelt fresh and the grass was green as usual. The river flowed beautifully down the waterfall and then it carried on snaking into the distance. The clouds joined all together and made a black patch of darkness. A storm was heading towards them and it wasn't going to be pretty. A strike of lightning hit their picnic basket and made a crackling, and banging noise. Suddenly the blanket burst into flames and they ran away to let the fire die down. They ran and ran, all of a sudden they slipped in mud. Plonk! Their clothes were filled with mud and they looked up as a castle was appearing in front of their eyes.

“I pegs first!” shrieked Cat woman.

“No I do!” Cinderella started to moan and then it turned into an argument.

“OK first one there.”Cat woman yelled   

“You're  on.” said Cinderella. They.They struggled from the gooey mud, clothes caked to their legs and  tried to get out. Eventually they did crawl their way out. they started running and they both  had a tie. they tried not to moan at each other but it didn't satisfy.

“ There’s was only one way to settle this and it was going to be getting killed by… Cat woman. “This is going to be like killing a kitten”  protested Cat woman.

“ Ready?” asked Cat woman, Cinderella replied,

“Ready than I’ll ever be.” Three, two, one Cinderella came out and Cat woman moved back by the window. Cinderella said

“ might not want to go there” and swung her last kick. Cinderella kicked her out of the window and Cat woman fell to the ground cracking her head wide open. In the living room Cinderella said “ look on the bright side I've still got a castle. Cinderella meet a Prince got married and lived happily ever after
