What is Money?

The Year 3-8 students began a unit on Financial Literacy today.
As a 'hook in' we read Jack and the Beanstalk and discussed how the cow was traded for magic beans. Jack had agreed to this deal we know as bartering.

Ten groups of three were then distributed a selection of multi sized boxes and tubes. Only three groups were given tape, but they had less boxes. The challenge was to barter with other teams to acquire the materials required to build the tallest free standing tower.

The learning from this was that you don't get things for nothing, there is always an agreed exchange between parties to get what you need.

Creating a maze

Today we shared the Big Book called The Gardener’s Maze by Dot Meharry.
We then had a discussion about mazes and direction.

  • The Fantails created mazes using blocks with verbal directions using left, right, forwards, backwards

  • While the rest of the school were introduced to compass reading. In small groups they had to write direction between two points in the school using the compass points N S E W NW NE SW SE, as well as land marks. This proved to be a challenging task, especially the part where you always need to stop and check where North is :)
